Proper placement is important because it tacks the vocals to the screen, and also allows effects to flow without breaks from left to right, allowing for the suspension of belief. It also handles the majority of vocals and dialogue in music and movies and ties all the action together across the front stage to create a palpable sense of realism. While underrated, the center channel is arguably the most important speaker in a surround sound system since nearly 70% of all audio playback comes through the center channel at any given moment. I do find it interesting that the Yamaha manual doesn't say the Z7 has to be vented only that the enclosed space must have the dimensions of (20+30cm) x (44+20cm) x (44+20cm) therefore in that situation the air volume would be approx. (I've just rechecked the manual and it does say that temperature rises of more than 40DegC is normal with an ambient of 25DegC so that would mean that their design Ta would definitely be around 75DegC). However, given the fact that the Z7 is passively cooled and for Yamaha to pass EU rules had to put a plastic heat insulator on the top I'd suspect they are on the upper reaches of the range. They could have used anything from 35-45DegC up to about 60-80DegC. Ta(max) is decided during engineering design and as Yamaha don't publish what values they use all we can assume is the range they've used. I don't know what power amp ICs the Z7 uses so I cannot check exact figures - but checking the specifications for a 140W STAC IC Amp the Tj(max) is 150DegC with a 1:1 conduction figure (i.e. However, the external temperature does directly relate to the internal temperatures (Tj) and depends on heat conduction by the Heatsink (Ts) and the surrounding air (Ta) as per: Tj -(Rjc)- Tc -(Rcs)- Ts -(Rsa)- Ta Not necessarily the temperature experienced outside the case. ![]() It is the temperatures at the semi-conductor junctions (Tj) inside the chip that matter. ![]() Most semi-conductor devices these days are designed to run warm as cooling is expensive.
